The Inwood House

Posted in Uncategorized

Established in 1830, the Inwood House has channeled its resources and manpower to help teenage parents take charge of their lives despite their early entrance into the world of parenting. Every year, the Inwood House services approximately 145 pregnant teens, 800 teen mothers, and 40 teen fathers.

Residents are put into classes that teach them parenting and independent living skills to help them become good parents and self-sufficient adults. But aside from helping teenagers to rise from their difficult situations, the Inwood House is also involved in other humanitarian endeavors shown by the following programs:

Project Straight Talk – a program that aims to help Grade 5 boys from the South Bronx by developing fruitful child-parent communications on sensitive issues

Boys to Men – this project provides 11-16 year-old boys from South Bronx a safe environment by engaging them in meaningful and productive activities to keep them away from gangs and become more useful members of the society;

Youth For REAL (Responsibility, Excellence, Achievement and Leadership) – this program seeks to engage 250 students in grades K-8 in the South Bronx in arts and culture enrichment.

Teenage pregnancy is rising in the United States. Studies conducted in 2006 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that births by teenagers climbed by 3%. In addition, mothers aged 15 to 19 gave birth to about 435,000 babies in 2006.

The Inwood House seeks to change that and more.

Carlos Abadi is a proud sponsor of the Inwood House.
