Poker Terminology: ‘Free Roll’
There are actually two uses of the term ‘free roll’ in online poker, and both of them are good for the player who has them. The first instance of free roll, and probably the more common of the two, are free online poker tournaments offered that allow you to play without a fee, often for a variety of prizes. The other version, and the one I’m more interested in discussing here, is when a player is in a hand that he is likely to split with another opponent, but that he has a small chance of winning outright, with no chance of losing. An example of this kind of free roll would be when two players end up all in, one with AK suited in diamonds and one with AK suited in spades. Before the flop, these hands are an exact even money chance of splitting. Now say the flop comes with two diamonds and a club. The player with the diamonds is now on a free roll to win the pot, in that though both of the players have the same hand at the moment and are likely to split, if the player hits a diamond he can win the pot entirely, while his opponent has absolutely no combination of cards he can hit to win. Free rolls of this nature are pretty rare, and nice when they do happen, even though most of the time they end up in the split pot that they are meant to be. It’s never bad to be free rolling in online poker though!
