Internet Scams: Prevention Better than Cure

Posted in Uncategorized

Shopping on the internet has become more and more popular, which has been phenomenal for the consumer – it’s never been easier to go shopping. Also, the increase in competition united with the cost-effectiveness with selling online has encouraged low selling prices for items.

All The Same, as the online market has expanded, so too has the necessity to be cognizant of your consumer rights, and what you should do if you are in receipt of goods that you paid for but didn’t actually get or faulty goods. Information is made public online, such as the consumer protection act 1987.

Another consideration is which payment provider to use to pay for your items, as each payment provider has its own terms and conditions. For example, Paypal act as an independent arbitrator only for physical goods, not digital downloads. Knowing this type of information is the difference between getting a refund or being ripped of by an internet scam.

Our word of advice is to do your research about the seller : do they publish their postal address and phone number? What is the vendor’s returns policy? Their terms? Their privacy policy? All these doubts need to be addressed prior to considering making a purchase from the vendor.

Another important point to consider: how is payment taken? These days, it’s inadequate to merely look for an SSL certificate – this doesn’t inform you how they keep your data, only how it’s transferred when you make your purchase. If you have doubts, only purchase from sellers who use third party payment providers such as Google Checkout, PayPal, SagePay, NoChex and WorldPay.Also you can see what reputation the vendor has with his payment gateway, e.g. check his PayPal account and how many transactions have taken place on this individual account.
