British Holidays Have Hidden Costs
People planning British holidays this year have been urged to consider the amount that additional items such as children’s beach toys and excursions can add to their budget.
The Post Office carried out a survey which found that a set of six typical beach holiday items could set travellers back anything from £19.41 in Croatia to £56.50 in Greece.
However, the research also showed that some attractions will be affordable this summer, with the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos and a chairlift ride up the Blue Mountains in Bulgaria costing less than £10 for a family group.
British travellers could also find that evening meals are cheaper in France and Spain than in the UK.
“We found that while a family meal costs around £57 in Brighton, it would set UK tourists back much less in Croatia and Bulgaria – and least of all, £31, in Spain,” said Sarah Munro, Post Office head of travel services.
“More good news for holidaymakers is that the French government has just slashed VAT on restaurants to 5.5 per cent from 19.6 per cent.”
Travellers were advised to make sure they exchange their currency in advance to avoid getting an unfavourable rate at the airport or having to pay commission fees.
