Boat Detailing – How to clean and protect your boats teak and Gel-Coat

Posted in Uncategorized

Compounding (Oxidation Removal):

Gel-coat, the exterior finish on fiberglass boats, is a porous mix of polyester resins and pigments that must be sealed from the damaging effects of ultra-violet (UV) rays, salt, dirt and weather. Neglect it, and it becomes more porous due to the oxidation of the mixture resins and what remains is a faded, dull finish.

Yearly compounding will keep your boat looking good for years. Periodic polishing with a fine compound will remove the oxidation. Applying and maintaining a good coat of wax will prevent further deterioration.
*If your boat is already dull and chalky you can restore it to its original luster by machine compounding, polishing, and waxing.

Protecting your Gel-Coat with a coat of wax:

Waxing will remove oxidation and restores your boats paint or gel-coat finish to a glistening shine. A fresh coat of wax will protect your boat from U.V rays and keep salt, dirt and other environmental pollutants from penetrating and damaging your boats finish.

Cleaning and Restoring your Teak:

Teakwood is a unique wood due to the natural oils and waxes it contains. This is why it holds up so well in an outdoor environment. When teak gets older it turns a gray color. This is from the oils and waxes in the wood drying out and the cellulose that is left behind reacting with oxygen in the air turns gray in color. You can restore your teak to its natural color by lightly scrubbing it with high grit sandpaper and special detergents such as ammonia and dish detergent.

Protecting your teak:

Nothing makes your boat look more beautiful then a brand new coat of varnish on your wood surfaces. A high quality varnish will greatly extend the longevity and beauty of the wood. Varnish will prevent the wood from absorbing moisture, environmental pollutants, and protect it from spills and dirt.

Run Fast, Run Free

Posted in Uncategorized

What made Michael Johnson a world-beater? His upright running technique did not appear fast until we appreciated the distance between him and second place! To run faster do we emulate him? Many have tried and invariably failed. Does Johnson know something we don’t?

The most common response to the thought of stepping up the pace is to put more effort into the stride. If the legs are already being over worked due to a less than efficient technique, the centre of the brain (motor cortex) that initiates the action has to send more impulses adding to the traffic in the feedback loop. We have the sensation that we are running quicker because of the increased effort, but are we using our energy efficiently?

The next time you want to increase your speed try the following method. Initially, when you have decided to quicken the pace, observe what you normally do to achieve this. After a minute, slow down to a comfortable jogging pace and again think about raising the pace. This time do not think about running faster but instead just move your arms quicker. If we think of only moving the arms faster, requiring less energy, the legs will match the speed. Try the exercise and experience the difference. The first time you speed up you will use your usual habitual method, the second will feel different because it will be unfamiliar.

A recent study at Harvard University titled: ‘Faster top running speeds are achieved with greater ground forces not more rapid leg movements’, Weyand et al (2000) found that runners reach faster speeds not by repositioning their legs more rapidly in the air but by other means. Head of research, Peter Weyand explains: – When you see someone running at top speed, his or her legs and arms are swinging all over the place. There is just not enough active muscle power available to account for all the motion you see taking place.

So where does the force come from? To determine what limits top running speed, thirty-three runners of varied ability were monitored performing at different speeds. Surprisingly the amount of time taken to reposition the leg between steps (swing time) was approximately the same at top speed for all runners. The slowest runner’s swing time almost matched that of the 1996 Olympic 100 metre champion, Donovan Bailey!

So if the swing time is not a factor, how do the faster runners achieve higher speeds? The researchers discovered speed is determined by the amount of force applied to the ground rather than how rapidly limbs are moved through the air. The greater the force, called the support force (SF), coming down through the body to the ground results in a greater force pushing back up, called the ground reaction force (GRF). Remember Newton’s third law of gravity! So those runners putting more into the ground got more out of it. Peter Weyand again: – Much of the work of running is done through passive mechanical processes, in which tendons and muscles act though elastic rebound, much like springs uncoiling, the uncoiling delivers the power to swing your legs.

At first this seems wrong because surely to run faster we need to move the legs quicker. This study suggests that extra effort applied to moving the legs faster may not therefore be the most efficient way to increase speed. The upward thrust of the GRF is translated into forward motion by the action of the hip, knee and ankle joints. If the act of trying to move the legs faster leads to unnecessary muscle activity, joint movement will be impeded therefore reducing the leg’s efficiency to perform its task. When we run faster obviously the legs move quicker but this should be a result of a greater force pushing the leg back up from the earth (a recoil action). For example the harder you throw a tennis ball at the ground the higher and faster it bounces back up. The faster a leg comes up from the earth, the quicker it comes back down.

The paper summarises the results by stating:

We conclude that human runners reach faster top speeds not by repositioning their limbs more rapidly in the air, but by applying greater support forces to the ground.

The study also found how the fastest runners achieve the characteristic longer strides. It has been known for many years that longer strides meant faster running. Coaches encouraged sprinters to practice taking longer strides and devised exercises to strengthen appropriate muscles (many of which lead to injury). This now appears to be wrong. Trying to lengthen the stride length decreases a muscle’s ability to apply the support force required to get back up for the next step. Runners are not faster because they take longer strides. It is the other way around; runners take longer strides because they are fast. They are fast because they apply greater support forces to the ground allowing them to spend longer time in the air, hence the longer stride. So if the secret to achieving greater speed is to apply more force to the ground, how do we go about doing it? I suspect that in the light of this research there will be coaches looking to strengthen the muscles that push the leg downward. However is this the right approach? Whilst muscle strength is a factor, it could prove to be detrimental to performance if all that strength is misapplied. In the act of trying to drive the leg down, the athlete will increase the risk of injury due to increasing the amount of stress placed on the joints. It may also reduce the recoil action if the joints are not allowed to move freely.

I believe one factor is balance. If the body is off balance the application of the support force is impaired by unproductive muscle activity holding us up instead of allowing force to go down. You can test this by leaning backwards as you run. If we can reduce interference with our balance mechanisms to an absolute minimum balance will take care of itself. Another aid to applying greater support forces is to swing the arms faster (as discussed earlier). Freeing up the shoulders and moving the arms quicker and wider will increase force and also I believe activate the segmental rolling reflexes that coordinate the upper and lower limbs.

Perhaps we can now understand why Michael Johnson’s upright style is a world-beater. To run faster we should do as little as possible. Our ‘efforts’ are more likely to impede free movement. Remember; less is more!

People set on repairing to this area may range from young families in search of a new life perspective to OAPs looking to enjoy themselves and have a break. Why There Are Slow and Fast Ices in Hockey

Posted in Uncategorized

Depending on how into ice hockey you are you might or might not have heard the terms “slow ice” and “fast ice”.

What you know for sure though is that the game of ice hockey is being played with a puck and what the terms refer to is the pucks ability to move on the ice.

On fast rinks the puck moves fast and on slow rinks the puck move slow. That is logic, but why is this and can it be considered a problem?

The main reason why the problem with slow and fast ices arises is that hockey is played both up in Canada as well in southern USA and it is because of the difference in climate.

Up north where it is cold and dry you get fast ices without lots of snow on it and in the south you get ices with more snow on them because of the warm weather and humidity.

In hockey the players most often want to play on fast ice surfaces, because that makes them feel more in control of the puck.

The ice gets slow because of the snow that is being created during the game and it makes the puck bounce.

One thing that is funny to hear though is when hockey players complain about that it is the ice’s fault when they lose a game.

Don’t they realize that both teams are playing on the same ice?

Improve Your Golf Swing by Keeping Your Golf Club on the Correct Swing Plane

Posted in Uncategorized

We as golfers have heard the term swing plane many times during our golfing careers. But do we really know the definition of it and the bearing upon our golf swing?

Recently, I had a conversation with Dean Reinmuth (top 30 teaching pro ranked by Golf Digest) and I think he described swing plane the best. Dean suggests to think of the swing plane as an imaginary circle. The imaginary circle that represents the swing plane is set at an angle. It is the path on which it is necessary for the club to travel in order to execute the swing correctly.

Beginning at address, the clubhead and shaft should be positioned at the “bottom” of the swing plane. During takeaway into the backswing and at the transition point of the swing, the clubhead and shaft are to remain on the swing plane. These three phases of the swing represent the club traveling “up” the swing plane to “top” of it. Keep in mind the visual of the circle and the shaft of the club dissecting the shoulder during these phases of the swing.

Once the transition is complete, the downswing begins and the clubhead is moving down the swing plane. The path on which the club is traveling down should be the same as on the backswing.

Continuing on with the swing plane, the club is to travel to again the “bottom” of the swing plane for impact with the golf ball. Once impact has occurred with the golf ball the follow-through of the swing occurs, and it is still necessary for the club to travel upon the correct swing plane. This assures that you are releasing the golf club correctly.

The swing plane on the follow through is essentially a “mirror image” of it on the backswing. The golf club, again, must travel up an imaginary circle that dissects your front shoulder up into the finish position.

What does the swing plane represent?

The swing plane represents the path on which your golf club should travel upon during the swing.

Why is it so important for the golf club to travel upon the swing plane?

The golf club must travel upon the correct swing path in order to impact the golf ball correctly. Impacting the golf ball correctly provides the greatest possibility of delivering powerful, accurate, and consistent shots on the course of play.

Oftentimes the golf club does not travel upon the correct swing plane. What happens in such instances?

The path of the club becomes and “outside to in” move resulting in a slice, or an “inside to out” swing plane resulting in a hook. Overall, the club’s not traveling on the correct swing plane results in poor shots.

Now that we know what a proper swing plane is within the golf swing and we can visually create a picture of it, how do we develop the proper swing plane?

This is the hard part, and there are no secrets about it. Referring back to my conversation with Dean Reinmuth, he suggests that it is a process of creating “feel” for the proper swing plane. Creating “feel” is a process of knowing where the clubhead is on the swing plane. This allows you to know where your golf club is in regards to the proper swing plane required of the golf swing.

How do you go about creating “feel” within your golf swing?

It is a process of understanding the mechanics of swing and developing the proper swing mechanics within your golf swing.

This allows you to know what the golf club should be doing, where it should be during each phase of the swing, and when it is not where it should be when you are swinging the golf club.

Overall, it becomes a process of recognition. Recognition of what is the right and the wrong movements/positions within the golf swing. Once “feel” is developed within your swing, I would definitely say you are close to mastering the golf swing.

This does require time and effort on your part. But if you are willing to put in the time and effort, rewards on the course will be well documented.

Ready, Steady, Crocked

Posted in Uncategorized

The motorway was hell, your dinner was in the dog, but by some superhuman effort involving changing in a telephone booth, you just about made it to the sports centre on time. You’ve had a bad day, you want to hit something, but you couldn’t find the traffic warden, so it will have to be a shuttle. And now…you’re raring to go.

You strip off the tracksuit, select your favourite racquet (hopefully a Prince) and step onto court for a ‘knock’ – just to warm you up. Jim whacks one up and you, forgetting that you’re not playing for the Town Hall clock, in fact not even playing, leap backwards and hit a clear, exercising a perfect scissor kick just like your coach taught you. Magic.

Regrettably, the twang you hear next is not the sound of your sweet spot connecting with the shuttle, but rather that of your Achilles tendon snapping as your foot hits the ground. No more badminton for a while then; but, hey, no more motorway either, unless you drive an automatic.

The moral of this story is that a knock up is a knock up, not a warm-up. Badminton is a physically demanding sport and the better you are the harder it will be. (Assuming that your opponents are of a similar standard). Whilst it is true that most club players do not warm up, it is also true that many of them pick up injuries, particularly as they begin to age. Many years ago I recall writing a newspaper article in which I described a veteran pair as ‘one bandage short of a full set’.

Research as early as the seventies highlighted that calf injuries are common in badminton, especially with the over 35s. Shoulder injuries are also common. Not all injuries are accidental; many result from overuse or bad technique (or both). There is a wealth of information available on warm-up and stretching, but I will write about warming up for badminton in the future. A few minutes warming up, light jogging, sidestepping, and some stretching, could save you a lot of money on bandages.

You only get one body; look after it.

San Francisco Concerts

Posted in Uncategorized

If you fancy a cheap city break you might be interested in looking for cheap San Francisco hotels . With prices starting at under $70 a room you can afford to treat yourself to a couple of nights away from home and perhaps do a bit of sightseeing too. There are so many tourist attractions to choose from, your only difficulty might be deciding which one to see first. The best way to see the sights has got to be either on foot or by public transportation. In fact, if you were thinking of using a rental car you might want to think again. With its one-way streets and difficulty finding a parking spot you’d be well advised to forget about driving, and using the buses and streetcars instead. A Muni pass will entitle you to ride on all the buses and streetcars, and at $1.50 it’s a lot cheaper than a parking fine. Streetcars are also great if you decide to go out on a shopping trip and it’s a long way uphill to get back to your hotel.

And if you’re a music lover there are some wonderful concert venues to choose from. If you’re a classical music buff you might want to book some tickets for a concert at the Davies Symphony Hall . If you prefer modern music you’ll be well advised to take a look at the Fillmore. Whichever show you’re interested in you’ll want to make sure you get value for money, and fortunately cheap concert tickets are readily available. By using an online booking agent you’ll be able to see who’s on where, view the price lists, and book yourself a ticket or two. It makes sense to book online if you can, you’ll be able to see photographs of the venue and get detailed directions from your hotel too.

Best Home Treadmill: 4 Things You Need To Look For

Posted in Uncategorized

Choosing the best home treadmill can be confusing as you sift through all of the options, new models, and brand name ‘deals’. Too often, people get caught up in all the ‘Goodies’ a treadmill offers them that they miss the fact that the treadmill doesn’t have the basic essentials of a quality unit.

By knowing the 4 basic essentials of a quality home treadmill, you’ll be able to quickly sift through the treadmill deals and choose the best home treadmill for you.

The 4 basic essentials to a quality treadmill are:

#1 – High Powered, Well Built Motor

Since the motor is the most expensive part of the treadmill to fix, a good motor is essential to your treadmill. Try to find at least a motor power of 2.0 HP, preferably higher.

Remember that a 1.5 HP motor has to work twice as hard as a 3.0 HP motor – so it will burn out long before the 3.0 HP motor.

Also, not all motors are built with the same quality parts. Look for a good brand name and a long motor warranty to give you clues as to the quality of the motor.

#2 – Excellent Cushioning

There’s not enough said about cushioning and it is so important in a home treadmill. A good cushioning system protects your joints, ligaments and back. A poor cushioning system can result in injury and pain.

I know of one woman who bought a cheaper brand of treadmill and then ran on it. Within 6 months, she had damaged her hips so badly that it hurt her to even walk on the treadmill. You definitely don’t want that!

Make sure your treadmill offers an excellent cushioning system – especially if you’ll be running!

#3 – Extensive Warranty

You want to protect your investment so a solid treadmill warranty is a must. A good treadmill warranty will cover the frame for at least 30 years, the motor for at least 5 years and other parts and labor for about 1 year. Anything above that and you’ve got an excellent warranty.

But a warranty isn’t just to protect your investment – a good warranty lets you know about the quality of the treadmill parts.

Treadmill companies do not include warranties because they think they’ll have to fix the treadmill within that time frame. They know that they WON’T have to fix them within that time frame because the quality of parts used are high. So if you find a treadmill with a 10 year motor warranty, you KNOW it’s a quality built motor. If the motor warranty is only 90 days however…that tells you something.

#4 – Quality Brand Name

Certain brand names have a reputation for building a high quality home treadmill. Other brand names may be well-known but they don’t necessarily have a good reputation.

Choose a treadmill that has a solid, trusted brand name. Not sure which brands are good? Check out expert ratings and ‘Best Buys’ on various treadmill review sites and/or magazines. You’ll start to see a trend where certain brand names come up frequently. These brands are the quality treadmill manufacturers.

So those are 4 basic essentials of a good home treadmill:

- High Powered, Well Built Motor

- Excellent Cushioning

- Extensive Warranty

- Quality Brand Name

Knowing these, you can sift through the treadmills available and easily locate the best treadmill for your home.

9.4 percent interest rate may come along so good but will it stay the same after you’re going to pay back your bank loan

Posted in Uncategorized

It doesn’t matter if you live in Bridgeport Connecticut or in Newport News Virginia a effective online investigation will salvage you often a lot of inconvenience. A merchant bank in Huntington Indiana or so can have a total different actual rate for a 15000 dollar credit loan then a bank in La Crosse Wisconsin and that makes a huge clear gap in your monthly costs. That’s why now you need to look into and control if you can have a loan at a right percent rate of interest.

Investigate to see if the moneylender who is tending to give you a bank loan is honorable. A lot of the banks wil show you a loan rate that is looking effective but feels poorly or so after some time. 15.6 percent rate may come out so upright but will that be unalterable after you have to pay back your loan. At this present you can check up on rates quickly online and visit if there are other conditions you should be aware of. You should be sassy today to check out if you have a nice deal or if you don’t with the merchant bank that offers you a money loan.
